Quantum entanglement could mean completely secure data transfer

By tapping into Albert Einstein's idea of "spooky action at a distance," researchers at the University of Copenhagen's Niels Bohr Institute have discovered what might be the key to completely secure data transfer -- keeping particles "entangled" for up to an hour. Until now, the link between two entangled systems could only be maintained for a fraction of a second. This development could enable a direct link between two systems of communication -- you do something to one and the other will "know." Although limited to the lab right now, scientists are working on practical applications for networking and the internets. Hey, SSH maybe it's time you started watching your back. Check out the full PR after the break.

[Thanks Nan]

New IBM chips use silicon to mimic human brain

Usually, we celebrate when new processors raise the bar with faster clock speeds and higher benchmark scores. IBM's latest prototypes are far from high-performance designs, but they're nonetheless worthy of note because of a unique architecture patterned after the human brain. That's a rather big departure from traditional CPUs, as MIT's Technology Review explains.

The IBM chips in question represent relatively simple brains, such as the ones found in earthworms—or, perhaps, Jersey Shore cast members. They're pretty nifty, though. 45-nm transistors are laid down on top of a memory array, replicating the close ...

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power
Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

Macs as artist: The interactive robotic painting machine

Artist and composer Ben Grosser sent us a tip about his latest project, an interactive robotic painting machine. The machine has three computers that run python code written by Grosser, two of those being computers for those who "Think Different" -- a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro.

The process is fascinating to watch and hear, as the machine "listens" to outside sounds as input into what it should paint and creates its own body of work. Grosser noted that he's been critiquing the machine as it paints, giving it audio input as it makes brush strokes indicating whether or not he likes what it's done. He mentioned that he's "found that I tend to dislike these paintings more than others it makes, suggesting that listening to a constant critique of one's creative process may not be productive."

A video of Head Swap: Collaborative Work for Amplified Violin and Interactive Robotic Painting Machine (2011) is shown below. In this video, the machine listens to music composed by Zach Browning and played by violinist Benjamin Sung. Part of what you hear is actually the machine as it goes through its motions, creating its own counterpoint chords as it paints. The art created by the machine may not appeal to everyone, but it's a captivating and Apple-powered work that can produce striking and somewhat beautiful paintings ... and music.

IBM First Synaptic Chip Tries To Mimic Human Brain

Backed by U.S Defense funding, IBM has recently announced the world’s first “synaptic” processor project: it’s a chip that which mimics the human brain architecture. The company calls this an unprecedented progress in building a machine that will (try to) learn, and understand – two things that computers have not been so great at so far.

In theory, the IBM chip is capable of re-wiring itself (like our brains) to adapt to certain situations or certain types of computations. At the moment, IBM has managed to perform some basic operations like solving mazes or recognizing mildly complex patterns. However we are still far from what “intelligence” commonly means to people.
